S P L I T T I N G
‘S P L I T T I N G’ is an artistic visual representation of my personal experience with Borderline Personality Disorder and the psychological phenomena of splitting, a term used in psychiatry to describe the inability to hold opposing feelings, thoughts or beliefs – sometimes referred to as black and white thinking. Splitting feels as though there is no middle ground, that the only options are either all negative or all positive. These feelings can become extreme and all encompassing to the point where you feel as though your mind itself is two different entities of the same being – all being held together by the fragile threads of the disorder yet at the same time being slowly split apart. Creating this piece was a cathartic way for me to process the complex emotions that came along with my own diagnosis of BPD during my last years of schooling at Emily Carr.
The artwork within the frames was first illustrated digitally before being printed onto paper. Each element of the piece was then carefully hand-cut and assembled into the two dioramas to create one full image which ultimately contains eight layers of paper per frame. I’d like to think that the depth of these images speak to the metaphorical depth and layered complexity of my personal experience with the disorder. The fox-like creature is a representation of myself, with the addition of a breathing LED light behind its eyes to signify that despite its body being appeared to be split in two, it is still in fact alive and present amongst the chaos.
The Ghostfox Lenormand Oracle Deck
This thirty-six card oracle deck was created as a semester long project during my third year of studies at ECUAD; Inspired by the original Lenormand Oracle, this deck stays true to the original in both meaning and imagery while transforming each card with a dark, occult, & magickal twist.
A physical deck for viewing can be found through the library reading room. Decks for sale can be found on my Etsy shop!
